Joomla 3.10 release will be the last scheduled minor release of the Joomla 3.x series and will be a long term support release.

Joomla 3.5 was released on March 21, 2016.[42] Release 3.5 contains download system information, category item counter, insert modules in articles, drag & drop images.

Joomla 3.0 was released on September 27, 2012.[31] Originally, it was supposed to be released in July 2012; however, the January/July release schedule was uncomfortable for volunteers, and the schedule was changed to September/March releases.[32] On December 24, 2012, it was decided to add one more version (3.2) to the 3.x series to improve the development life cycle and extend the support of LTS versions.[

Joomla 2.5 was released on January 24, 2012, six months after 1.7.0. This version is a long term support (LTS) release. Originally this release was to be 1.8.0, however the developers announced August 9 that they would rename it to fit into a new version number scheme in which every LTS release is an X.5 release.[29][30] This version was the first to run on other databases besides MySQL. Support for this version was extended until the end of 2014.

Joomla 1.5 was released on January 22, 2008, and the latest release of this version was 1.5.26 on March 27, 2012.[20] This version was the first to attain long-term support (LTS); such versions are released each three major or minor releases and supported until three months after the next LTS version is released.[21] April 2012 marks the official end-of-life of Joomla 1.5; with Joomla 3.0 released, support for Joomla 1.5 faded away in April 2013.[22][23]

Joomla 1.0 was released on September 22, 2005 as a rebranded release of Mambo that combined other bug and moderate-level security fixes.

Updating your current Joomla version

If you’re still operating with Joomla 3.1 or 2.5.x, you need to complete the following steps:

  • Access the backend of your site and navigate to Components > Joomla Update.
  • Click on the option to install the update.
  • Allow the process to complete.

If you experience cache issues that result in Joomla not determining that an update is available, follow these steps:

  • In the back of your Joomla site, navigate to Extensions > Extension Manager. Open the “Update” tab.
  • Click “Purge Cache”. This will clear out the entire cache.
  • Click “Find Updates” in the toolbar. The screen should list all available updates if there happen to be any.
  • Install the update.

As always, the first step to be taken is the total backup of your site.

Before upgrading, ensure that your site is fully backed up. Please be aware that you could experience difficulties with 3rd party plug-ins that aren’t compatible with the newest version of Joomla.

If you would like to update your extensions, make sure you don’t have any modified (hacked) 3rd party extensions. If you didn’t develop your website yourself, please consult your web developer to find out what was used to make your site. Any modification of Joomla files is strongly not recommended due to the fact that upon updating Joomla, you’ll overwrite these files which will result in your website not functioning correctly. If you happen to be using a 3rd party extension template, please use the overrides.

Ensure that all things are up-to-date.

Go to Extensions > Extension Manager

  • Check to ensure that your extensions are all updated to their latest versions.
  • Ensure that you’re currently running Joomla 2.5.

After that, upgrade! Go to Components > Joomla Update and then click on the “Options” button:

Change the Update Server to Short Term Support; then click Save and Close.

On the test site, the final step will be to click on “Install the Update”. Should everything complete successfully, you should then be able to do it on your live site.

Upon upgrading, ensure that there aren’t any database errors. In order to check, go to Extensions > Extensions Manager. From here, click on the “database” tab and see that the ‘database schema version’ matches exactly with the version of Joomla that you’ve just installed. If it doesn’t match, locate it and click the “Fix” icon in the top right corner in order to fix your database. Now you should be finished!
